The Great Iran

The Great Iran comes to Slovenian readers at a time of heightened interest in the political dynamics and deeper understanding of the Islamic Republic, especially in the wake of the wave of women's protests that followed the killing of Jina Amini in September 2022. We have a lack of insightful analyses of what is happening in Iran in the domestic media and academic research, as the widespread depletion of journalism, the closure of correspondents' offices and Eurocentrism leave Iran with almost no space beyond sporadic and blanket condemnations. Even with the current attempts at multilateralism, understanding of the Other is often limited to the interests of states - we hear a lot lately about the interests of Russia, for example, which are in fact the interests of Russian big capital and senior military commanders, but less or almost nothing about the interests of a nation that is either dying on the front or at home, impoverished and intimidated. Giuseppe Acconcia's book provides an insight into domestic, regional and global political realities through the prism of a diverse and multifaceted Iranian society, its sincere aspirations, its real interests and its internal contradictions.
